Once I got my premium starter kit (PSK) and experimented a little bit, I was really excited to get my oil collection going. I needed more! I looked at a few blogs and researched the google for “best oils for beginners” and “most common essential oils” and “best oils for dogs” and umm, yeah…the list goes on and on. Ultimately, everybody has their own favorites based on their body chemistry and family needs. Here’s mine!
1 Sacred Mountain || Black spruce, ylang ylang, balsam and cedarwood blend is a breath of fresh air! I love this oil for emotional time outs and relaxation. I use it during yoga and meditation on my wrists and tip of my nose, a drop on my scarf, and in every diffuser in our home. If I have to travel for work or school, this is also the oil I take in my travel bag for zen time. It’s very grounding and centering and peaceful.
2. Valor || Courage in a bottle I say! I love this oil for a variety of reasons, but mostly because it helps me feel brave and reduce pain. Life is hard and we work hard and I’ll take all the relief I can get. Huff away for a dose of self esteem. Drops along the spine help reduce back and hip pain, a drop on the tip of the big toe and/or along the jawline helps relieve snoring. Rub on the chest for mental clarity…and on and on. This oil is sometimes called the unicorn of essential oils because its just so magical. It smells amazing too… kinda like Fruit Loops. Thank you rosewood, blue tansy, frankincense and spruce!
3. Northern Lights Black Spruce || Clearly, I am a fan of the conifer oils. I’m sure it has everything to do with my kapha dosha but more on that another time. This gem is distilled at the Northern Lights farm in British Columbia, Canada and adds a rich aroma to diffuser blends and homemade lotions. Its great for improving the appearance of dry skin and makes a fantastic addition to an epson salt bath or massage. Black spruce is also carries antispasmodic, antibacterial, and expectorant properties. I love using this oil for congestion relief. Place a few drops on a washcloth and leave it on your chest while the relaxing in a hot shower. So nice!
4. Peace & Calming || This oil was my first oil addiction…like how did I ever live before it. I found myself wanting it every night to relax and also help stop me from grinding my teeth (wayyyy bad habit). I love it on our dogs when we go to the vet. My husband enjoys this oil for fighting insomnia. Peace & Calming is great diluted in a rollerball for unexpected stressful driving, tests and paying bills. Haha! I also think this would be great for kids with moodiness and tantrums. Hell, add it to their Playdoh. Because Young Living practices sustainable harvest practices, stock up on this one when you can! It seems to go out of stock every year.
5. Citrus Fresh || Next to the conifer oils, my other favorites are the citrus oils. Citrus fresh hits every note of happy in my book. This blend of orange, tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, mandarin orange, and spearmint is my favorite addition to my water and morning sunshine smoothie. Its great in room freshening mists or linen sprays. I add it to my homemade cleaners. It adds energy and inspiration to any cup of tea. A drop or two on a cotton ball is great as a car air freshener too. Since citrus oils are photosensitive, you will want to stay out to stay out of the sun for while if you are applying this oil directly to your skin.
6. Manuka || I use manuka oil on my face and hands EVERYDAY. After cleansing, I mix one drop with organic argan oil and apply in small circles starting at the top of my forehead, gently around my eyes, tap it into those sinuses and back to small circles again on the cheeks and jawline. Keep going down your neck, around the collarbone and onto your decolletage. Its fresh, herbal aroma has amazing anti-inflammatory benefits (hello, sinus allergies), it’s faded old acne scars and sunspots, restored fussy dry areas, calmed and cooled irritated pores, and restored vibrancy to my overall skin appearance. One 5-ml bottle has lasted me 6-7 months…and I’m still experimenting with manuka honey face masks, manuka body oil, manuka baths with fresh herbs and/or citrus, etc. It’s also great for nails and feet! Manuka has also been used to treat dandruff, inhibit bacterial growth in the body, rid fungal infections, promote wound healing, relief from depression/anxiety, reduce pain and swelling caused by bug bites or stings.
7. Joy || Oh, joy. Shes so cozy and sweet. This oil is a blend of ylang ylang, geranium, jasmine, palmarosa, rose, bergamot, lemon, and tangerine . Whoo! I put a drop or two on wool dryer balls when I dry our laundry. I add it to my homemade body wash. I love this oil over the heart to induce happiness and romance. Joy is also in one of my favorite diffuser recipes too – equal portions of this oil and grapefruit is bliss!
8. Grapefruit || This oil is cold pressed from the peels of grapefruit freshly picked from the orchard. Its a wonderful oil for uplifting your spirit, beating jet lag, curbing cravings and supporting a healthy metabolism. Its also a great addition to homemade sugar scrubs. It helps to reduce the appearance of scars, relieve menstrual pain, and purify the air. I have even used it to buff our kitchen sink!
9. Christmas Spirit || Hello, holidays – which for me is basically all of autumn and winter because I will celebrate just about anything until the sun is back and the grass is green! I love this oil for so many things! I even created an online class about this oil and never held it! I blame it on those pesky final exams! But I love this oils for salt dough diffuser ornaments, room spray or drop onto pine cones in a bowl, Santa’s Little Sleepers Linen Spray (CS + Frank + Lavender + Orange), a rollerball for Christmas on the go, great addition to homemade hand soap, drop onto laundry balls for your guest’s towels, drops on my scarf for personal diffuser, , mistletoe sugar scrub (2 Frank + 2 Orange + 1 Peppermint + CS), bath salts or foot soak, on a cotton ball for car diffuser recipe and to eat!! It’s a perfect addition to coffee creamer ( with cinnamon, vanilla extract and maple syrup), Christmas sangria, Christmas cheesecake dip ( with graham crackers or gingerbread men dippers), homemade marshmallows and Christmas maple syrup (super over oatmeal/porridge, yogurt + granola, waffles, pancakes, pudding). I even have dreams of Christmas parades and caroling with cozy hand-warmers scented with this oil! As a member, it’s a steal at $10!!
10. Orange || Orange is one of our most used oils at home. It blends so nicely with woodsy scents, florals, other citrus notes and softens spicy herbal aromas in the diffuser. I use a drop on my toothbrush to whiten my teeth and also in my homemade body wash. Orange oil is an anti-inflammatory and high in anti-oxidants so its often used in colonic massage to relieve sluggish bowels and constipation. It also contains the very high levels of d-limonene which fights cancer and boosts immunity. I use a couple drops orange oil with a couple drops palmarosa (in the lemongrass family) on our wool dryer balls for chemical free scented linens. We have even used it to repel ants by our door frames.
11. Cedarwood || Two words: sweet dreams!!! We love this oil in our sleepy time rollerballs and diffuser blends. Cedarwood is also great for repelling bugs and it contains 98% sesquiterpenes. Sesquiterpenes are highly oxidative and cleansing to the limbic system, the pineal gland (the third eye) and the pituitary gland which programs hormones and cellular functions, manage emotional responses and memories. I don’t know about you, but I’m always happy to keep those things in balance. 🙂
12. Cinnamon Bark || Oh so warm and cozy, this oil never disappoints. I love it in our cinnamon rolls and banana bread. It’s perfect in all those fall and winter diffuser blends. I roll it on the the bottoms of my feet to help balance blood sugars. Its great for supporting cardiovascular health and boosting immune functions. I love it in warming lotion bars and dental mouthwashes. It’s a great anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. It surprisingly is great on acne too – be careful if you have sensitive skin – dilute as necessary with a carrier oil!
Other oils I considered adding: Oregano (super strong antibacterial and fungus warrior), Rosemary (memory booster and marinade maker), Helichrysum (amazing oil for reducing scarring and slowing active bleeding), Deep Relief (super handy pain reliever and headache tamer), Tea Tree (just google it – never ending uses) and Sage (spirit powers).
Seriously though, what can’t oils do?!?! Do you have other favorites I might be forgetting? Comment them below!
